The business was established in 2018 when we accepted an invitation to join St. James's Place. We have steadily built the business, largely through personal referrals from clients, and we now work with over 350 clients, supported by Amelia, our Practice Manager.

Through our growth and move to Halesworth, we wanted to rename our practice to fit with the new surroundings and established ourselves as Sole Bay Financial Planning in September 2023.

Why did we call our business Sole Bay Financial Planning?

The name Sole Bay has been around for many years. The Battle of Sole Bay took place on 7^th June 1672, the first naval engagement of the third Anglo-Dutch War and it must have been quite a spectacle as it involved around 165 ships, Dutch on one side, English and French on the other.

We know our family have been in the Sole Bay area since then, so it has been part of our history for over 350 years and we could not think of a more appropriate name for the business.

Sole Bay has played a major role in our family’s history as fishermen and lifeboatmen working out of Southwold, so it reflects our deep roots in the area.

Interestingly, Sam was even named after a famous local lifeboat coxswain, working out of Southwold.

So, choosing this name for the firm seemed obvious!

The above link is to a story about a famous rescue undertaken by the Southwold lifeboat, the Alfred Corry. Sam May was the coxswain of the Corry for almost twenty years and it is now housed on the harbour-side in the Southwold lifeboat museum, having been restored. Apparently, Sam was in the crew for thirty years and she was never put to sea for a rescue without him.
